Why do some preschools only allow underprivileged children into them?

Riley Migl: The federal government funds certain preschool programs (usually Head Start) for kids who are disadvantaged either by socioeconomic status and/or speaking no or little English. This is because study after study over the years have shown that the money put into the "system" at this early point (otherwise known as Early Intervention more than pays for itself over the years up ahead. However, as others have advised you, there are surely other programs in your area that your child can go, but these are probably not subsidized by government funding and therefore you would have to pay. Some programs are co-ops where the parents all put in some time working to make the cost less. Check around--for a preschooler, often a 3 hour morning program and then being home is the afternoon is the perfect amount of time to be in preschool.....Show more

Clifford Gombos: I just recently enrolled my niece into a private preschool. The preschools you looked at are probably ! specifically meant for children of those situations.

Christy Tirabassi: Did you go to some sort of Head Start Program? This type of preschool is a government preschool and is only to be used by the underprivileged. In Hawaii, we have many of these types of preschools due to the need for them, the language barrier that hinders children and teachers, as well as the poverty that we face as an inflated state. As for a child's financial situation, it's not really the child's situation. It's a familial situation. As a whole, the school can act as a counseling center for the underprivileged familes. This is normally what Head Start Programs do.I also agree with you that better off to do familes are equally entitled to preschool, just not the ones that are made for underpriviledged children. How would you as a parent benefit from financial counseling or foreign language interpreters. It would be a waste of resources on your part as well as that of the government that offers t! hem.And just to let you know, most preschools are private. Unl! ess of course, you go to Head Start. And all preschools no matter where you go, are high dollar ones! Especially in Hawaii! Please be aware that schools cater to not just children's needs, but families as well....Show more

Kenneth Thuesen: BTW: I don't have a kid going to preschool. I just noticed this today. And kids from any financial bracket can go to kindergarten, so it isn't like the low income children will not be allowed to go to school. I am just saying, why do these kids get a jump start on kindergarten and the mid to high income kids don't?

Kenneth Queener: They probably get money from the government and have to take children from those categories to be able to qualify for it.

Travis Colomb: they receive government grants. My son goes to a public elem. school that allows teachers that teach there no intrest on student loans. Mostly spanish speaking children attend

Janeen Perona: Those school are there to give kids who couldn't go to school d! ue to financial or other reasons the chance to go! I'm sure there are more than 2 preschools in your area - look around.

Elaina Adolfson: Hi I am 21 and I have a 4 year old sister and we enrolled her in preschool. My parents are middle income family. Her preschool is in the elementary school. Check into that. Good Luck!
