Jehovah's ws, if you are a 1975 survivor, do you feel guilty about ignoring your children's higher education?

Theresia Fashaw: Like you, I was 25 in 1975 and I suffered the consequences of my parent's belief that we only needed compulsory education because this wicked system was about to end.My parents became Jehovah's Witnesses in the 1930's. My eldest brother had to fight them tooth and nail just to get to High School - he had passed the entrance examinations but they wanted him to go to Secondary School. My sister and I were actually rewarded for failing to qualify for High School because all they wanted was for us to quit school at 16, pioneer and then marry a J.W. and bring up a family in "the truth".In 1968, the 1 May Watchtower informed us that "Eight years from the autumn of 1967 would bring us to the autumn of 1975, fully 6,000 years into God's seventh day, his rest day... Some of the generation that discerned the beginning of the time of the end in 1914 will still be alive on earth to witness the end of this present wicked system of things at the battle of Armageddon." ! We were all expecting great things to happen after the autumn of 1975 - great things that would culminate in Armageddon. My parents believed they were part of that generation to see the end of this present wicked system of things at the battle of Armageddon. They believed a higher education was unnecessary. They were wrong. After doing everything according to my parents' wishes, I left that organisation when the eagerly anticipated events of 1975 failed to materialise. My J.W. husband left me for another woman, I had no job and no house and I literally had to leave the country and start a new life for myself. I often think back to how gullible and naieve I was and wish I had been given an opportunity to get some meaningful qualifications and a decent job. However, that was then and this is now.I have come to rely on God and put my trust in Him and He never lets us down. He takes care of our every need and I am just so grateful that He brought me to a place of repentance and ! forgiveness....Show more

Marti Declue: Winkie, u probabl! y could have done even better with more education, I could have! But I am glad u happy! Are u concerned about those not so lfortunate as u?

Brittanie Zakutney: Wealthy billionaires and multi millionaires can say what ever they please. Heck, if I had multi millions I can say "You don't have to be rich to be happy." Liars, if that's the case then give us your money and then we'll decide if we're happy or not. But its true, you don't need higher education to be rich. Learning through experience can get you there too. We are people that are God given gifted. All we need to do is know what our gifts are.

Nicolasa Henke: Hullo grandpa. Nice to see u. I was 25 in 1975, and know u would have been considered weak witness for sending your children to college. But good on you. How did u escape the mind control?

Marquetta Gimm: My parents were baptised in 1974 when I was just 2! I was expected to grow up, pioneer, and marry and elder....all in time for the 'ne! w system'! My parents did not allow me to go to college! (I went later on but didn't finish as I had to work to support my family!) I continue to struggle!A college education IS necessary in this day and age!...it's what each individual DOES with it that counts...that goes for Jws and NON Jws!...Show more

Flor Lizardi: Kalika, I am unfulfilled in my job at this time, and higher (I wish I had said tertiary or college education, now that I think about it. Could be mis-construed to mean something religious!) but am financially ok. It is just that better education gives u more choices. I grew up with some of the weaker bros and sis who did go to college and are still witnesses and happy in a profession and not just a job.

Lashawn Zabarkes: What a moronic, truly ignorant and bigoted question. I, and many, many others who have chosen not to pursue so-called "higher education" are living just fine......with jobs that take care of our basic needs and allow us to cont! inue to likewise carry out our preaching assignment. Interestingly enou! gh, my coworkers make less money than I do AND they went to college whereas I chose otherwise. So to try and make a blanket claim that only by going to college can one "reach their potential".....it's simply ignorant and not true. The real mistake is thinking a college education is critical to a so-called "successful" life, when the reality is that in this economy and job climate.....a college degree doesn't really mean all that much. ** Again, a college education is way overrated and really doesn't guarantee any success. I'm doing fine the way I am, as are countless others. Not everyone is in a position to choose college even if they had the desire to go, and as long as someone is content with "sustance and covering" as the Bible puts it, it's all good. And when you say I could have probably done "better".....in what sense? Making more money? Having a bigger house? Having a nicer car? Material things are pointless and do not lead to a truly happy life. Even wealthy million! aires and billionaires have been quoted as saying as much....Show more

Hipolito Rightmire: They do not. Because they honestly believe they are doing them a favor. And they are honestly wrong

Granville Stray: 1975 survivor? Let me guess you another of those who claim Jehovah's Witnesses said that the big A was going to occur then. Having been around Jehovah's Witnesses almost all of my life I wonder why this silly claim persists. Miserable dead end job? No. I enjoy what I do. It pays the bills, keeps the family fed, warm and dry. What more could I need? I have worked with college students over the years. Did it help them? Some were benefited some were not. I can't picture being $80,000.00+ in debt before reaching the age of 20-21.Edit to add:"NMB u infer that the organisation didnt lead their members to believe that 1975 was D day for great tribulation etc. I guarantee that u werent around then. One thing a true Jw is, is truthful." I'm not infering anything. ! I was there. I was 18 in 1975. I was baptized in 1973 so how are you go! ing to back up your guarantee? I have read some of the claims about 1975 and am forced to wonder why said feelings weren't evident in any of the congregations in our circuit. I visited many different congregations during that time and didn't see any of this nonsense....Show more

Vickie Clampett: NMB u infer that the organisation didnt lead their members to believe that 1975 was D day for great tribulation etc. I guarantee that u werent around then. One thing a true Jw is, is truthful.

Rodolfo Merel: well, lessee. one is a computer programmer analystnext one is a psychologistnext one is studying to take the CPA test. all born in those times.do YOU feel guilty about something?i knew nothing would happen in 1975 bcuz no man knows the day or the hour.battled wth a bunch of brothers on the service committees who were pushing the thing back in 72-75. i told em. and here i cam still hangin on. Alisia Sutphen: No, parents among Jeh! ovah's Witnesses raise their children with good morals, a good work ethic, a sense of priorities, and the ability to take responsibility for their own decisions. When a child becomes an adult, it seems rather obvious that his decisions are his own.Frankly, it is pathetic when an adult continues for years (or decades!) to blame his parents for every decision he himself made, or for some imagined lack of support for the child's supposed preferences. The Bible itself teaches that at some point a child must "man up" and take responsibility for himself... ..(Gen 2:24) A man will leave his father and his mother and [after that] he must stick to his wifeIncidentally, Jehovah's Witnesses and others continue to choose God's Messianic Kingdom as their priority. Higher education has never been discouraged on its own merits, but has been mentioned among entertainment and materialism as that with the potential to distract from a life of godly devotion. The year 1975 was never presented ! as some "finish line" beyond which education and material resources wou! ld not be needed.During the 1960’s and early 1970’s, Jehovah’s Witnesses merely noted that Bible chronology seems to indicate that the 6000 year anniversary of Adam's creation was during or about 1975. Even then it was recognized that 1975 had no potential for theological significance unless Eve’s creation followed Adam’s by mere months. The date of Eve's creation is of much more theological significance because it represents the last act of the sixth creative "day" (the sixth day did NOT end at Adam's creation, which was earlier than Eve's by some unknown number of years, decades, or centuries)... ..(Genesis 2:2-3) And by the seventh day God came to the completion of his work that he had made, and he proceeded to rest on the seventh day from all his work that he had made. And God proceeded to bless the seventh day and make it sacred, because on it he has been resting from all his work that God has createdIn the decade or so leading up to 1975, Jehovah's Witness pu! blications mentioned the possibility that Adam's creation was mere months before Eve's. In retrospect, of course, that idea seems remarkably odd because the bible explicitly notes that Adam performed the task of observing and naming all the animals before Eve's creation. Also decades ago, the publications of Jehovah's Witnesses 'wondered aloud' as it were, whether the Millennial Reign of Christ could be thought of as overlapping the final thousand years of the current seventh 'creative day'; if so then it seemed interesting and symmetrical to imagine that Jehovah had arranged for the seventh creative day to be of seven-thousand-year duration (which would have begun after Eve's creation). But only the date of Adam's creation was known with some degree of certainty, and the rest was presented as educated guesses rather than as some inspired revelation or special message from heaven. Of course, Jehovah's Witnesses never pretended that they were certain of these ideas, and in f! act their publications have not mentioned the ideas in decades... ..(Re! velation 20:4-6) [Christians anointed for a heavenly resurrection] came to life and ruled as kings with the Christ for a thousand years. (The rest of the dead [who are resurrected to earthly life] did not come to life until the thousand years were ended.) This [earlier heavenly resurrection] is the first resurrection. Happy and holy is anyone having part in the first resurrection; over these the second death has no authority, but they will be priests of God and of the Christ, and will rule as kings with him for the thousand years. It is sad when the enemies of truth work to spread misinformation regarding this peaceful Christian religion. It would be better for a self-described Christian to stop his negativisms and instead begin performing the work assigned to true Christians. During the thirty years since 1975 Jehovah’s Witnesses have doubled their numbers in the United States and tripled themselves globally; now seven million Jehovah’s Witnesses focus on Christ’s wor! k, demonstrating real love for God and neighbor... ..(2 Timothy 4:2-5) Preach the word, be at it urgently in favorable season, in troublesome season… For there will be a period of time when they will not put up with the healthful teaching, but, in accord with their own desires, they will accumulate teachers for themselves to have their ears tickled; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, whereas they will be turned aside to false stories. You, though, keep your senses in all things, suffer evil, do the work of an evangelizer, fully accomplish your ministry... .. (Matthew 24:14;28:19,20) And this good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations; and then the end will come. …Go therefore and make disciples of people of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit, teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded...Show more
