Financial Aid Probation?

Jacques Teri: mmm:Financial aid probation is a warning period, but it has no impact on the amount of aid that you receive.Students on aid probation have been warned that they are not complying with the Satisfactory Academic Performance (SAP) standards at their school. Because you must be in compliance with SAP to remain eligible for financial aid, it's a warning that you must regain that compliance before the probationary period ends.At most schools, probation is for one semester - which means that you'll have one semester to pull your cumulative GPA above 2.0, AND pull your total pass rate back above 70%. Keep in mind that classes "count" once you've registered for them - you can not evade the 70% pass rule by dropping courses to keep your GPA up.If you don't comply with SAP by the end of your probationary period, you will be placed on financial aid suspension. Students on aid suspension are ineligible for any further financial aid. At that point, you would be required t! o pay out-of-pocket until you pull your grades and pass rate up.Aid suspension will follow you to any other school that you transfer to - and it remains on your record indefinitely. If you "take a few semesters off", you'll return to school with that same suspension still in force. One possible reason for your reduced aid amount is that you wound up owing your school money for a partial repayment of previous aid. If you pay for classes with a Pell Grant, and drop the course before the 60% point of the semester, you are required to repay a portion of the grant. Your school would have to recapture that money before they could provide you with any further aid.The other, more obvious reason for reduced aid checks is simply that the cost of your tuition and fees were higher this semester than they have been in the past. You don't receive an a refund of some predetermined amount, you receive whatever is left from your aid when your school has taken out what you owe them for tuiti! on and fees. If your expenses increase, there's less money lef! t for a refund.Get that probation taken care of, or there will be no aid at all next year.Good luck!...Show more
