What does ammonia do for laundry?

Nell Dipiero: Ammonia In Laundry

Jesse Pirieda: Ammonia is good for removing acid stains such as perspiration and urine, or removing odors. Ammonia in the wash will make all the laundry fresh and sweet smelling. There are two types, sudsy, that contains a small amount of detergent and regular ammonia. All the manufacturers include instructions on the bottle for using the product in the laundry. Mixing ammonia and chlorine bleach causes a release of chlorine gas vapors that can be deadly. There are cautions on each bottle label about this as well. The biggest difference with today's detergents is a hot water wash uses more electricity. Many, many people only use a hot water wash for something really dirty. And of course there are some fabrics that you never want to wash with hot water....Show more

Hunter Osterberger: Hi,Ammonia is good for helping to remove bodily stains such as blood etc. You can also use an oxygen based bleaching agent in the wash, although sometimes one product will counteract the effectivness of the other.Hot water is fine for cottons, especially things like chefs whites, cold water is good for delicates like silks. The hotter the water, the more likely it is for the dyes to loosen....Show more

Sammie Bocanegra: I am a almost 70 yr old lady who has been doing laundry for about 60 years. I have NEVER heard of using Ammonia in laundry. That product can be used for cleaning floors and other stuff, but I would not put it in laundry. And YES, it is VERY dangerous to mix bleach and ammonia, so DON'T. The reaction can kill you o! r make you very sick. Cold water is for delicate laundry. Use! warm for clothes and hot for towels, sheets etc.

Olen Penhallurick: Yeah, I use ammonia in my laundry, too! Hot water, cold water, it really doesn't matter. In my experience, the cold water is best for rinsing - it gets all the suds out. Also, I noticed that the brand you use really makes a difference. My store brand works okay, but it's nothing compared to Parsons.....and don't worry if it says 'sudsy' on the label.....it works the same as the clear.

Brian Freedland: Can you use ammonia to clean the washing machine?

Adrian Paraz: Ammonis is a grease cutter. In laundry It dissolves the grease or oils from the clothing especially if the water is warm. I use it to get the yellow wax stains out of old cotton pillow cases. It also works on yellowed men's underwear if chlorine doesn't work. Don't use ammonia and chlorine at the same time!
